Science programme

From Higgs physics to the next generation of instruments

CCICC members work across the four LHC experiments, detector and accelerator upgrades, distributed computing and future colliders — turning scientific goals into lasting engineering and data capability.

LHC physics

Across all four LHC experiments

Chinese teams contribute to physics analysis, detector operations and upgrades, triggering and reconstruction across ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb.

LHC experiment

ATLAS Experiment

ATLAS is a general-purpose detector at the LHC, co-discoverer of the Higgs boson in 2012. Chinese teams contribute to Higgs physics, searches beyond the Standard Model, top-quark physics and detector upgrades.

  • Higgs properties and di-Higgs production
  • Searches for supersymmetry and dark matter
  • ITk inner tracker upgrade
  • Trigger, reconstruction and analysis software
LHC experiment

CMS Experiment

Built around a compact superconducting solenoid, CMS has delivered landmark results in Higgs, top-quark and heavy-flavour physics. Chinese groups contribute to detector operations, upgrades and data analysis.

  • Higgs and electroweak physics
  • High-Granularity Calorimeter upgrade
  • Muon and tracker operations
  • Distributed analysis and machine learning
LHC experiment

ALICE Experiment

ALICE studies the quark–gluon plasma produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Chinese teams play important roles in heavy-ion analysis, silicon detectors and online data processing.

  • Properties of the quark–gluon plasma
  • Charm and beauty hadron measurements
  • Silicon pixel detector upgrades
  • Online and offline data processing
LHC experiment

LHCb Experiment

LHCb uses precision measurements of heavy-flavour decays to probe matter–antimatter asymmetry and rare processes. Chinese groups contribute to operations, online triggering and flavour physics.

  • CP violation and the CKM matrix
  • Rare decays and new-physics searches
  • VELO and upgraded detectors
  • Real-time triggering and reconstruction

Facilities & upgrades

Building key instruments for the HL-LHC era

For the High-Luminosity LHC, members contribute to detectors, accelerator components and engineering systems.

Accelerator technology

Contributions to HL-LHC interaction-region superconducting magnets, accelerator physics, beam diagnostics and future facility studies.

Detector upgrades

Work on ATLAS ITk, the CMS High-Granularity Calorimeter, ALICE silicon pixels and LHCb upgrades — from R&D to integration and operations.

Engineering & integration

Mechanical, electronic, cryogenic and control-system work that turns prototypes into reliable long-term instruments.

Operations & maintenance

Sustained involvement in shifts, calibration, quality control and analysis to keep detectors running and producing physics.

Computing & data

Turning vast data into science

The LHC produces enormous volumes of data every year. Members operate the WLCG Beijing Tier-1 centre and contribute to distributed infrastructure, software and algorithms, providing reliable computing and storage for Chinese teams.

Beijing Tier-1

Storage, processing and distribution for LHC experiments, serving users across China.

Distributed computing

Connected to the global grid, with work on operations, monitoring and data management.

Algorithms & AI

Machine learning for triggering, reconstruction, simulation and analysis.

Open science

Open sharing and sustainable maintenance of data, software and tools.

Future colliders

AGORA: a next-generation detector for FCC-ee

Members are contributing to AGORA, a next-generation detector concept for future lepton colliders such as FCC-ee and CEPC. Built around a high-granularity glass calorimeter, AGORA targets precise energy measurement, particle identification and particle-flow reconstruction, aiming for a concept with no significant performance gap under FCC-ee conditions.

  • Glass calorimeter and endcap RICH
  • Physics and object-performance benchmarks under FCC-ee conditions
  • Key4HEP / EDM4HEP and the FCCSW software stack
  • Detector simulation, backgrounds and overlay events
