Mission & mandate
A shared platform built by China's particle-physics community
CCICC brings together China's universities and research institutes to create a single channel, shared positions and a long-term mechanism for working with CERN.
Overview
Built for collaboration, sustained by it.
The Consortium of Chinese Institutions for Collaboration with CERN (CCICC) is a voluntary platform of Chinese universities and research institutes working with CERN. It was founded by IHEP, USTC, UCAS, Peking University, Nanjing University and Central China Normal University, and its Secretariat is hosted by IHEP.
Since the first MoU in 2019, CCICC has strengthened coordinated Chinese participation in the four LHC experiments, accelerator technology, detector development and distributed computing. With 16 charter signatories and several more in the pipeline, its reach and coordinating capacity continue to grow.
CCICC does not replace members' existing experimental collaborations. It adds a consortium-level platform for coordination and policy — serving individual members and the wider national interest in large-scale international science.
What we do
Four functions, one shared purpose
From aligning agendas to connecting resources, CCICC supports members throughout their CERN collaboration.
Coordinate
Align priorities and common issues across institutions and experiments.
Represent
Speak with one voice in structured dialogue and joint governance with CERN.
Connect
Connect members with national funding and policy channels.
Train
Support exchange, joint supervision, technical training and capacity building.
Cooperation framework
CERN–CCICC cooperation under the MoU
MoU
In 2019 CERN and CCICC signed the first collaboration MoU, establishing the China–CERN Collaboration in Particle Physics. Cooperation is carried out through the MoU and later arrangements.
- 2019 MoU
Established the China–CERN Collaboration in Particle Physics. - Implementation
Cooperation proceeds through the MoU, addenda and later arrangements. - New MoU
The two sides are negotiating a renewed text on scope and governance.
Cooperation arrangements are subject to formally signed documents.
Milestones
From a single MoU to a community
First collaboration MoU signed
CERN and CCICC signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing the China–CERN Collaboration in Particle Physics.
LHC experiments honoured
ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb shared the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, with sustained Chinese contributions.
Growth and renewal
Charter signatories grew to 16 institutions, with several more in the pipeline, and a new MoU entered text negotiations.
Future colliders
Looking ahead, members are advancing AGORA and other detector studies for future lepton colliders while deepening the CERN–CCICC MoU cooperation.
Join CCICC
Shape the next frontier of particle physics with us
Chinese universities and research institutes engaged with CERN are invited to join the consortium and share its platform and mission.
